WE 4 YOU
ASTM-SIAS Motorway Operators have undertaken to maintain facilities in good conditions and improve safety standards. The safety performances of the motorway network are a feather in the cap as compared to the other roads. Tunnels are even safer.
But ... remember that a wrong BEHAVIOUR may worsen the situation and put lives at risk. For instance, vehicles too close to each other in a fire make it spread from one to the next in an eye blink. As a result, many vehicles burn together and no safety system can ever deal with that.
When? When queuing, especially inside tunnels, keep a correct safety distance.
What? Even when you're queuing, distance and a good safety margin are essential to avoid accidents and mitigate their effects once they have occurred, both in tunnels and open air.
Why even when I'm queuing? In the event of a fire in a tunnel, vehicles stationing too close to each other favour fire spreading. When vehicles are too close to each other, it is impossible to manoeuvre them, consequently, they hinder the passage of emergency vehicles. If you stop too close to the vehicle before, you risk becoming a harmless spectator of events because you're stuck between two vehicles, and by your own bad choices..
