ASTM-SIAS Motorway Operators designed high-performance safety barriers intended both to mitigate the impact of heavy-goods vehicles and be flexible enough against light vehicles, so to redirect swerving vehicles towards the carriageway. However, your own car and the motorway network are not designed to guarantee your safety when you exceed speed limits.Except for special instances, here are the speed limits set for Italian motorways:
- 130 km/h for cars (on dry roads)
- 110 km/h for cars (in the event of rainfalls)
- 100 km/h for buses, 80 km/h for trucks and articulated lorries
These are the maximum speed limits. Nonetheless, you should adjust your speed to external conditions (weather, traffic, road) and to any special restriction indicated for the stretch you drive through. Novice drivers in the first 3 years driving, have additional limits: they never can overpass 100 km/h on main motorways and 90 km/h on other roads.

Observe the speed limits set for traffic safety and maintain a speed suitable for the local conditions you encounter.
Why?
Not only does exceeding speed limits increase the risk of collision but, in such an event, it also increases the likelihood of serious or fatal injuries.
